Nicholas “Doc” Fierro, 91, passed away Tuesday (September 20, 2016) at Center for Hope Hospice in Scotch Plains. Born in Newark, he was a longtime resident of Garwood.
Nicholas was a veteran of World War II, having served in the US Army. He took part in the Rhineland Campaign and received the Purple Heart for his service. He was employed as a clerk with the Department of Defense in Springfield before retiring. He also enjoyed playing the lottery and the going to the horse track.
Surviving are his sister, Kathleen Sette; many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews and great grand nieces and nephews; and his beloved caretakers, Maria and Joe. He was predeceased by his parents, Rocco and Angelinamarie, and two sisters, Rosemarie Madaio and Gertrude Fierro.
Services will be held at the Parkway Wozniak Memorial Home, 211 Westfield Ave., Clark, on Friday at 11 AM. Interment will follow at St. Gertrude Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 4 PM to 7 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project of St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
